EC representative presents methane reduction roadmap afore COP29

The "Methane Emissions Partnership Roadmap," a high-level political document that will significantly impact fossil fuel importers and exporters, will be presented in Baku during COP29, the European Commission representative Mindaugas Laurinavicius told Trend.

The EC representative gave the statement following his speech at the Baku seminar "Turning Methane Pledges into Action" at the Baku Climate Action Week.

"The roadmap was announced by EC President Ursula von der Leyen at COP28. It will be presented in Baku during COP29, and its initial results will be reviewed at COP30," Laurinavicius said.

He emphasized that putting this roadmap into action will pave the way for decarbonizing global energy systems, bolster climate change mitigation efforts, and shore up energy security.

Azerbaijan airs agricultural share in global greenhouse gas emissions

Around 70 percent of greenhouse gas emissions worldwide come from the energy sector, while about 20 percent come from agriculture, Deputy Minister of Energy of Azerbaijan, COP29 Executive Director Elnur Soltanov said, Trend reports.

He made the remark during the international symposium " Sustainability and Innovation in Agriculture and Water Management in the Light of COP29" at ADA University today.

"Agriculture is essentially the second-largest source of greenhouse gases after the energy sector. What makes agriculture even more significant is how you define it," the official pointed out.

Soltanov mentioned that forests and lands soak up a hefty dose of greenhouse gases. Thus, these areas are worth their weight in gold, and it's essential for people to have a good handle on agricultural skills.

"This is very important in terms of reducing greenhouse gases. At the same time, we must protect farmers, who are often more vulnerable in many economies, including Azerbaijan, especially in developing countries," he added.

To note, the symposium is being held in collaboration with the embassies of Hungary, Italy, and Kazakhstan in Azerbaijan.

The event, involving scientists as well as local and foreign experts, covers global and regional perspectives, with a particular focus on the impact of climate change.

Azerbaijani SOCAR unveils details of its first methane emission reduction report

The State Oil Company of Azerbaijan (SOCAR) plans to present its first report for 2024 within the Oil and Gas Methane Partnership Program (OGMP 2.0) in May 2025, SOCAR's deputy vice president Hikmat Abdullayev told Trend.

“SOCAR joined the international methane standards program OGMP 2.0 in 2024, and in May 2025 it will make public its first report on this program for the first time,” he noted.

The report will include data on work concerning methane emission reductions at more than 1,000 emission sources located at 60 facilities of SOCAR.

“In May 2025 we will present not only the debut report but also an action plan for the next 5 years for each source of methane emissions (for all engines, gas compressor stations, production, transportation, processing facilities, etc.),” Abdullayev said.

To note, the largest methane emissions worldwide are recorded in the oil and gas industry, and following the agreements reached at COP28 in Dubai in December, SOCAR will report on its actions to reduce methane emissions following the latest global standards.

Zangazur Corridor will be shortest and safest transit route between Europe, Central Asia and China: Azerbaijan's Deputy Minister

"Azerbaijan will become the main player in Eurasian logistics if the Zangazur corridor is opened after ensuring the territorial integrity of the country,”

Deputy Minister of Digital Development and Transport of Azerbaijan Rahman Hummetov said at the panel on "Zero Emissions Shipping, Freight Logistics and Transport", APA reports.

The deputy minister said that the Zangazur corridor will be the shortest and safest transit route between Europe, Central Asia and China: “Azerbaijan is taking important steps in the transformation of its transport routes by investing in strategic infrastructure. As an example, let me mention that the volume of transit cargo passing through the territory of Azerbaijan increased from 5.7 million tons to 13.4 million tons in 2019-2023. Azerbaijan, together with its partners, is committed to "green transformation" initiatives along the Middle Corridor.”

Azerbaijani banks stand ready for more flexible regulation and support for sustainable dev't - CBA

Transition to sustainable development requires an innovative approach and integration of ESG criteria (environmental, social, and corporate governance) into the strategies and business models of banking institutions,
the chairperson of the Central Bank of Azerbaijan Taleh Kazimov said at a roundtable discussion on "Creating the Highway for Private Finance" at ADA University within the framework of "Climate Action Week", Trend reports.

“The finance industry plays a key role in supporting sustainable development, and today we are here to discuss how private finance can contribute to this process. The issue of sustainable finance is relevant both nationally and globally. We are at an important juncture: on the one hand, we have a responsibility to support economic growth, and on the other hand, our responsibility is to protect the environment. This creates additional challenges for the financial sector and the Central Bank, as it is necessary to take into account climate risks and ensure financial stability,” he said.

He noted that in 2023 the Central Bank of Azerbaijan approved a new system of regulation of the financial sector, one of the key elements of which was the introduction of green financial taxonomy.

“We developed this mechanism to align the activities of financial institutions with international standards. This year we introduced new requirements for banks to manage climate risks and incorporate sustainable development principles into their corporate governance and financial strategies. The Central Bank of Azerbaijan is actively working to support innovation in the financial sector, creating conditions for the successful transition of the economy to sustainable development models not only in Azerbaijan but also internationally,” Kazimov added.
